Tucked away in Central Oregon, just a two-hour drive from
Portland, the Deschutes River is one of Oregon’s
premier whitewater rivers. Discovery Outfitters’ traditional
Deschutes trip begins at Harpham Flats, just south of the
city of Maupin, and ends 14 miles down stream at Sandy Beach.
This section of river is known for its exhilarating Class
III and IV rapids, with names like Wapinitia, Boxcar, Oak Springs, and
Upper and Lower Elevator, which break up the peaceful slower water,
as it wanders its way between high canyon walls. The beauty
of the Deschutes is truly captivating; its high rock formations
and the green oasis of life at the valley floor, contrasted
by the open sky above make this an awe-inspiring float.
Rain is rare on this section of the river. It’s wild…it’s
wet…and you won’t forget it! For a single day
trip, this is as good as it gets.
The
McKenzie River is an excellent choice for people
who want to remain on the greener side of Oregon. This narrow,
fast moving river offers almost non-stop Class II and III
rapids on its upper sections. It is fast-paced, and a lot
of fun. The lower sections offer a little more time to relax
and catch your breath, only to loose it again in a few unexpected
places. The tall trees, thickly timbered banks, cool clear
water and surrounding mountains make this river a favorite
for many boaters. With enough to thrill the first-timer,
yet still keep calling veterans back, this is truly a river
for everyone.
